about

When weaving a tapestry with a loom, there are two key components: the warp and the weft. The warp threads are held in tension by the loom, and provide the underlying foundation of the tapestry. The weft threads are then woven through the warp threads to create the design. In the final product, the warp threads are completely hidden by the weft threads.

This relates to our music in the way we incorporate different musical influences, different threads, if you will, to create a cohesive sound. Some threads, such as the Middle Eastern sound of the oud or the Klezmer influences in the clarinet, are quite clear on the surface. You could consider that to be the weft of our sound. Other threads are not so obvious. All members of Wisaal are classically trained musicians, and most have played and/or studied jazz music while in school. Members of the group have also played in rock bands, symphony orchestras, and folk music ensembles. These experiences, while not obvious at first listen, all contribute the musical foundation, the warp, of Wisaal and shape the way we create and perform our music.
